A major Government review of local hospital services is underway, which is likely to see vital specialist hospital services moved away from Hammersmith Hospitals to Paddington.
Shaun Bailey and local Conservatives are fighting hard to keep both Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital fully open, with all of their existing services.
Local Conservatives believe that Charing Cross Hospital should be designated the major trauma centre for west London. It is the most accessible hospital with the busiest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department in west London and already handles more than two thirds of the emergency admissions of the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust.
Many of the essential specialist services – such as neuro surgery, vascular surgery, trauma & orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery – are already located on the Charing Cross site. If Charing Cross Hospital does not become a trauma centre these specialist services will be moved.
Commenting, Shaun Bailey said:
"It is very important for all residents that both Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital remain open. Unfortunately, I am worried that Labour Minister and St Mary's surgeon Sir Ara Darzi have already decided to move services to Darzi's own hospital in Paddington."
Local Conservative Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Greenhalgh added:
"Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust already acknowledges that there are various estates issues to address on the Charing Cross Hospital site. My worst fear is that Charing Cross Hospital will be downgraded to fund improvements elsewhere. This would be hugely unpopular with patients from across west London."
