Charing Cross Hospital - part of the Imperial College Healthcare Trust

Shaun Bailey was shocked to hear about the dreadful figures on pest control in the UK’s hospitals. 70% of NHS Trusts brought in pest controllers at least 50 times between January 2006 and March 2008. This is a worryingly high percentage for the country as a whole.

In Imperial College Healthcare Trust hospitals, which includes Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital, there were 91 separate occasions where Pest controllers were called out to deal with pest problems.  Pest controllers had to deal with rats, mice, cockroaches, ants, flies, pigeons, silverfish, bed bugs and moths. These problems have created hospitals which are unclean, dirty and most importantly unhygienic through the spread of germs.

Commenting on the findings, Shaun said: “I find it a disturbing sign that our hospitals are in such a poorly maintained state across the country. With regards to Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust, I am appalled. A hospital should be a clean and hygienic place where patients can be treated and not have to worry about rats and bed bugs.”
